Gimp Malfunctions on new G4, help

Greetings,

I just installed the Gimp package and the
Gimp Plugins.

I received no errors during the install and no errors at the Gimp startup initialization.

Starting gimp gives me the gui but there does not seem to be much working.

Gimp can't open even jpg's or gif's! Trying to open a new document gives a background of brushes and the Gimp image,

My environment: Mac G4 (Quicksilver) MacOS X 10.1.3, Dec 2001 Developer Tools, Xfree 4.2, Oroborosx (latest version).

Is the program toast ? If so how to uninstall.
( how can I find what was placed into /usr/local? anything that has a gimp in the name?)

Thanks
gray fox

I found that Oroborosx and Gimp don't play nice - try a full screen X session and see if that works better...
