GD + FreeType + PHP + GIF

I have gotten two-thirds of the way through using the patch that adds GIF back to GD -- I can compile GD with it on Mac OS X, I can compile FreeType, but I cannot get the whole thing to work when I compile PHP. Once patched, it seems impossible (to me, anyway) to get PHP to compile with both the new GD (that part works, including the createImageFromGIF part) and the TrueType imageString. Has anyone whipped this into shape yet?
