getting gaim to start

Hi, I compiled and installed gaim fine but when I try to run it, it says:
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

What should I do? Thank you!

Are you running an X Server? If not, get XFree86 and run XDarwin. Install them both then start gaim from a terminal in X.
